Recap

Day 1 (26 December 2022)

Dublin International qualified for the Final Four of the Men’s Celtic Cup to be played in Scotland in the New Year after two good wins versus Scottish entrants in DCU Sports Arena: a 22-14 victory over Tryst and following on from that win a 29-12 defeat of Kelvinside. In Group 2 Dublin City won 24-23 versus Scotland’s Livingston meaning after Day 1 an Irish side had yet to lose to a Scottish team in both the Men’s and Women’s competitions. [References: 2]

Day 2 (27 November 2022)

On the Sunday at DCU Sports Arena Kelvinside narrowly defeated fellow Scots team Tryst 25-24 to advance to the Final four in second place in Group 1 behind Ireland’s Dublin International. In Group 2 Astra-Wings from Dublin suffered the first defeat by an Irish team to a Scottish one in the 2022-23 Celtic Cup when narrowly defeated 25-23 by Livingston. In the third game in the Group Dublin City Handball took first place with a 25-22 win over Astra-Wings who were the only Irish team, Men’s or Women’s to suffer defeat and not make the Final Four in what was so far an extremely successful tournament for Irish Clubs. [References: 2]

Semi-Finals (18 February 2023)

Dublin International HC battled hard but came up short by three goals versus Livingston HC in the first semi-final. Dublin City HC were too strong, however, for a young Kelvinside team and ensured there would be an Irish representative in the Celtic Cup Final. [References: 4]

Third Place Playoff (19 February 2023)

Loud support for Kelvinside HC made sure they were stronger in their second match with Dublin International HC who had won their group game 29-12. This time Kelvinside played with passion and in an entertaining match which was 14-10 to DIHC at halftime the Dublin International Handball Club team won out 27-24. [References: 4]

Final (19 February 2023)

Dublin City represented Ireland in the Men’s Celtic Cup Final after their Women’s team had taken home the Women’s Celtic Cup Trophy earlier in the day. DCH were up against Scottish Champions Livingston HC, and were 19-12 up at halftime after an impressively dynamic start from the Dubliners. Despite Livingston scoring some well worked goals, the Dublin City team continued to dominate and improve their goal difference, winning 36-28 at the end to make it a Men’s-Women’s double for the team and Ireland. Gameweek by Gameweek Recaps

Gameweek 1 (22/29 October 2022)

Two extremely close games to opened the 2022-23 Irish Olympic Handball Association Senior Women’s League. UC Cork travelled to UC Dublin to take on the students in Belfield and came away with a 14-13 victory to head the table after gameweek 1. The previous weekend Dublin City and Astra played a 28-28 draw in Dublin City University. [References: 1]

Gameweek 2 (12-13 November 2022)

Astra HC moved to the top of the Table with a 35-14 defeat of rivals UC Dublin who remained pointless. Meanwhile in Phibblestown Dublin International HC got their season underway with a 32-20 victory over previous leaders UC Cork. [References: 1]

Gameweek 3 (19 November 2022)

Dublin City Handball gained their first victory of the season 32-21 at UC Dublin to move to three points alongside Astra who were on a bye week. Dublin International HC had a tough 20-19 victory at UC Cork to take the leaders spot in the Women’s Senior League on four points leaving UC Cork in fourth on two points. [References: Compiled from results in S-1 to S-5]

Gameweek 4 (21-22 January 2023)

Astra defeated Dublin City 24-23 in an extremely close game and Dublin International HC won 27-14 versus UC Dublin as the top two solidified their positions. [References: Compiled from results in S-1]

Gameweek 5 (4 February 2023)

UC Dublin won 23-21 at Mardyke Arena in Cork versus their UC Cork counterparts. The win was UC Dublin’s first of the season. [References: Compiled from results in S-1]

Gameweek 6 (11-12 February 2023)

Astra continued with their undefeated streak, now at four games as the DCU-based team won 41-22 at UC Dublin. Meanwhile in Phibblestown, Dublin International HC were shocked 14-21 by Dublin City HC to make it two wins from two for DCU-based teams over the weekend. Astra took over the lead from DIHC following the weekend’s results with Dublin City right back in the mix. [References: Compiled from results in S-1]

Gameweek 7 (25 February 2023)

Dublin International HC defeated UC Dublin 24-13 to gain their fourth win from five games. [References: S-1].

Gameweek 8 (4 March 2023)

Astra triumphed 23-17 versus Dublin International at DCU to make it 9 points from five games for the Northside-based team. At the Mardyke Arena in Cork, UC Cork fell 19-31 to Dublin City who were now on 7 points from five games. DIHC were on 8 points from six games. [References: S-1]

Gameweek 9 (11 March 2023)

At DCU, Dublin City Handball doubled the score of Dublin International, winning 28-14 to move above the Phibblestown-based DIHC on 9 points. Astra improved to 11 points with a 44-27 victory at UCD Sports Hall versus UC Cork. [References: S-1]

Gameweek 10 (25 March 2023)

Dublin City defeated UC Dublin 38-9 to make four wins in a row for the DCU-based team, and Astra picked up a forfeit victory at UC Cork to move to 13 points. The final games of the season in mid-April will decide the destiny of the League Title with the Final Four Playoffs to follow. Dublin City seem assured of a victory over UC Cork while Astra travel to Phibblestown to face Dublin International, who would be looking to regain some form and upset the Title celebrations with Astra needing at least a draw to be assured of the League Title. Report

The Men’s Challenge Trophy was the European Handball Federations competition for emerging Nations. Having competed with club sides & countries like Greenland in the mid-1990s, Ireland entered this competition for the first time in 1999.

Ireland found the going tough winning only 3 matches over the course of seven trophys – once against Malta (1999) and twice against Scotland (2007 & 2009).

Ireland’s Total Record in the Competitions from 1999 to 2012 reads: Played 34 Won 3 Lost 30 Drew 1.

About

Olympic Handball, sometimes called Team Handball or European Handball, is a team sport similar to Indoor Soccer or Futsal, except hands are used rather than feet.

The object of the sport is to pass the ball using only the hands in order to get into a semi-circle around the opposing teams goal, where a shot may be taken. Each score counts as one goal, and the court is the exact same as a Futsal court indeed Futsal was invented as an Indoor version of Soccer, using the Olympic Handball court.

The sport was invented in Germany & Northern Europe at the end of the 19th Century & beginning of the 20th Century.

Report

The Men’s Challenge Trophy was the European Handball Federations competition for emerging Nations. Having competed with club sides & countries like Greenland in the mid-1990s, Ireland entered this competition for the first time in 1999.

In Ireland’s seventh time entering the competition in 2012, they were placed in the tougher Group with previous winners Georgia, Faroe Islands & England.

Ireland lost all three group games, finishing last, which was a disappointment following the promise shown in the two previous Challenge Cups.

Moldova won the tournament for the third time, beating Faroe Islands 30-28 in a close encounter in the Final.
